Greetings!

It's "summertime and the livin' is easy"...or not!  We often don't have to wake up as early in the summer, there's no homework, it stays light later...it's a different vibe from the rest of the year.  That's good and bad! The kids also fight more because they're together so much, there's less structure so behavior becomes a "free for all", and so many more dynamics take place.

Here are a few of my summer time recommendations:

  • Set your expectations for the day or the week in advance so the kids know what to expect and what is expected of them. (i.e., reading, cleaning up, vacation rules, etc...)
  • Know your kids and what they can handle. If your child(ren) need structure, then create structure where none exists. If they need sleep, then stay strong with bedtimes. If not, a late run to the ice cream store makes summer that much more fun and teaches flexibility. Stay true to what your kids can and cannot handle. Everyone will be happier!
  • Build in some alone time so you're getting your own buckets filled and you will be refreshed and a lot more patient with the kids!
  • Watch the junk food intake for everyone! Summer is notorious for casual snacking. Make sure you and your kids aren't over doing it.  Poor eating can lead to poor moods, disrupted sleep schedules and overall feeling yucky.
  • Gradually get the kids back into school mode by beginning preparations far in advance, getting school supplies, new clothes/shoes, going to bed earlier, etc... to make the process less jarring and allowing kids to feel really ready once school actually starts.

Wishing you balance with sunshine and good memory-making times!
